Public’s Assistance Help in Locating Manitoulin Man

(Little Current, On) –
(Little Current, On) – Manitoulin OPP officers were involved searching for a missing person. Phillip Michael NADJIWON age 21 years described as 6 feet tall and about 190 lbs was reported missing to the Manitoulin OPP yesterday 29 February 2012. A missing person investigation was started into his last know whereabouts.

It is known that NADJIWON was last seen leaving a residence on Water Street in Little Current at 2:00 am on Sunday February 26 2012. He had not been seen or heard of since this disappearance.

The Manitoulin OPP asked for the public’s assistance in locating Mr. NADJIWON as the police were concerned for his well being. Shortly after the information went out to the public many calls were received in relation to possible sightings and his whereabouts. OPP with the assistance of the UCCM Anishnaabe Police Service followed up these leads which located Mr. NADJIWON in a safe and sound condition.

Police credit the assistance of the public and media assistance for locating this man quickly. “The public and the assistance of the media do an amazing job and the police truly appreciate their help” advised Constable Allan Boyd Community Services Officer with the Manitoulin OPP.

Police will be completing their investigation.

Texting comes with risks OPP tells teens

Once it’s out there, you can’t get it back. That’s the message the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is putting out to teens across the province.

A mistaken belief that their texted messages and images shared among peers will remain private and secure puts them in real danger of becoming victims of their own words and actions.
Teens frequently engage in relationships with peers through the use of their mobile devices and computers that lead to “self-peer exploitation” (also known as sexting). As a result of misbelieving that they can remain anonymous, they often also engage in this type of behaviour with individuals whom they don’t know but have only ever met online.

Teens need to become aware that this kind of risky activity has very real dangers associated with it that includes many unintended consequences and permanent long term threats to their identity and their reputations.

Every day, thousands of teens are photographing and videotaping themselves in suggestive and compromising photos and sending the images through electronic devices to their peers. Quite often, this type of conduct can quickly become a dangerous game as those images never stay with the one intended to receive it. Instead they are frequently mindlessly passed along by the recipient to friends, who pass it on to other friends who continue this cycle of distribution while some post them to social networking sites, and download them onto the internet.

The resulting shame and embarrassment that is experienced by the teen that is now a victim of their own actions as a result of their realization of what has occurred can have very tragic results.
Officers are increasingly seeing more teens that are unable to cope with the self-inflicted personal shame and embarrassment that they have unknowingly created from what they had previously believed to be “harmless fun”.

There is also a real criminal risk for those individuals who receive these images and re-distributes them. Often unknowingly, by sending the images to others and posting them, these individuals are engaging in the distribution of child pornography and could face the Criminal charges.

Parents, guardians and educators need to learn more about this serious social issue. They should recognize the significance of this problem, discuss it with their teens and monitor their social media activities. Reminding teens about the short and long term consequences of their social media behaviours will have a positive impact on this public safety risk.
Inspector Scott Naylor, Manager of the OPP Child Sexual Exploitation Unit says, “Self-peer exploitation has become a big social issue that no one has been adequately prepared to manage. Those with a vested interest in the protection of children need to get involved and learn how to protect them from permanently damaging their lives. Understand what self-peer exploitation is, and find out what to do about it. There are ways to intervene.”

For the second time this year, the Senior Wolverines claimed the NSSSAA Championship title to host the NWOSSAA Volleyball Finals. Last week the Senior Girls Wolverines hosted to compete against the NorWOSSA and SSSAA Champions. The Queen Elizabeth Warriors (Sioux Lookout) and ESC La Verendrye Viperes (Thunder Bay) travelled to Manitouwadge to take on the hosting team, the Manitouwadge Wolverines. The morning of February 23, 2012 brought the first match against the Viperes and Wolverines. In the first best 3-out-of-5 game, the Viperes took the first set (25-21) but the Wolverines came back strong in the second set with plenty of support in the stands (25-17).

The out of town Viperes took the next two sets against the Wolverines (25-13, 25-21) for their first win (3-1). Later that day, the Warriors challenged the Viperes in an intense five set game. The teams split with two sets each, Warriors (25-21, 25-20) and Viperes (25-13, 25-23). In the crucial fifth set it was the Queen Elizabeth Warriors from Sioux Lookout (15-8) to take the win (3-2). At 7:00 P.M. that night, the Wolverines stepped onto their home court with packed stands to beat the odds in their must-win game against the Warriors. With the crowd on their side it was the Manitouwadge Wolverines to triumph in the first set (25-17).

The Wolverines continued their intensity to conquer the next set (25-18) but the Warriors regrouped to win the third set (25-18). The Wolverines, ahead (2-1) over the Warriors, fell behind in the fourth set but as we know them to, came back stronger than ever with consistent serving and powerful attacks to win the close set and the match (25-23). With their first win, the Wolverines forced a three-way tie to stay alive. The Warriors and Wolverines would rematch the next morning before the championship game to determine who would go head to head against the Viperes. In the rematch game, the Warriors won over the Wolverines in three straight sets (25-19, 25-15, 25-20) to advance to the championship game.

It was another straight win (25-23, 25-18, 25-19) this time for the Viperes (3-0) against the Queen Elizabeth Warriors, to claim the NWOSSAA Championship title. The Viperes will move on to OFSAA (Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations) representing NWOSSAA. Thank you to all those who volunteered their time to make this event a success and all those who came out to cheer on our Wolverines. Congratulations on a great season and all your accomplishments Wolverines!

Local Cross Country Skiers Compete in Marathon’s Annual Ski Loppet

This winter’s mild temperatures have been providing great conditions for local skiers to get out and enjoy the trails and more chances to ski mean more opportunities to build up endurance and hone skills. These skills were put to the test on February 18th at the Marathon Cross Country Ski and Snowshoe Club races. Twelve skiers from Manitouwadge’s Northern Trails Ski Club took part in the event, the largest team yet. Youth skiers aged 6- 13 and a few adult skiers took up the challenge of racing on the hills of the Superior shoreline along with the local team of skiers representing Marathon. Skiers from Northern Trails Club captured 9 top three finishes. Well Done team Manitouwadge! The competition was intense with lots of tight finishes and a few skiers challenged themselves by racing distances they’d never skied before. As always the event is about enjoying the outdoors and some spirited, friendly competition and it was a great way to kick off the Family Day weekend. A big “Thank You” to Marathon club and their friendly volunteers for organizing a really fun day.
If you are interested in trying cross-country skiing why not visit the Community (Golf course) Clubhouse on weekends between 12 and 4pm where friendly volunteers can provide information on the 2 groomed local trails systems at the golf course and Kiwissa. Equipment is available to rent for the day.
Watch for the monthly ‘Ski Free’ days and various community events as advertised in the Forecaster or on the club’s Facebook Page. On March 8th the club is hosting a full moon ski starting at 7 p.m. On March 10th, the first Saturday of the March Break is a ‘Ski Free’ day.

Viperes earn final birth-Wolverines and Warriors battle again.

After day one, all teams are tied. In the morning match, Thunder Bay's ESC lavendyre Vipers defeated the Manitouwadge Wolverines 3-1. In the afternoon match, the Warriors upended the Viperes 3-2.
In front of a packed gymnasium the hometown Wolverines upset the favoured Warriors 25-17, 25-18, 18-25 and 25-23. Based on the NWOSSAA tie breaking protocol,Laverendyre advanced to the finals based on their head to head record against the Wolverines.

The tie-breaker between Manitouwadge and Queen Elizabeth will be at 9 A.M. The winner will play La Verendyre at 12:00 P.M.

OPP Issue Warning Again About Scam Artists

Area OPP detachments are warning people to be on the lookout for phone and online scams. The scams vary but the goal is the same and that’s to get as much personal information from you. Police say once the scammers have your personal info it’s easy for them to commit identity theft. This means they can make credit card purchases in your name, access your bank account and could even tamper with your investments. Police say be suspicious of anyone who asks you for personal information. Legitimate organizations already have this information about you so they won’t ask for it over the phone.

NDP Introduce Bill to Keep 10 Seats in Northern Ontario

Northern Ontario should not be short-changed when the Harper government changes the riding boundaries in Ontario to suit their electoral needs, according to Nickel Belt MP Claude Gravelle.
Gravelle kept the promise made Monday by the six NDP MPs during their barnstorming tour of the north, introducing a bill to protect Northern Ontario’s 10 federal ridings.
New Democrats are challenging the four Conservative MPs in the north to support the bill that highlights unique geographical, linguistic and historical considerations for why Northern Ontario should not lose another seat as happened during the last electoral boundary changes in 2003.
Northern Ontario is larger in size than all but two provinces and some ridings are larger than European countries. People already can find themselves long distances from their MP offices.
Gravelle also noted the Franco-Ontarien population deserves fair representation without being swallowed up in even larger ridings that do not reflect their language or culture.
Algoma Manitoulin Kapuskasing MP Carol Hughes seconded the bill, entitled “An Act to Amend the Electoral Boundaries Readjustment Act”.
Here are Gravelle’s remarks in the House of Commons last week.
Mr. Speaker, I thank my colleague from Algoma Manitoulin Kapuskasing for seconding this bill. It will protect all 10 of the current Northern Ontario ridings during the changes in electoral boundaries in Ontario.
It recognizes that population is only one of many factors to consider in the size of a riding. There is also geography, linguistic and historical considerations.
Northern Ontario is larger in size than every province but two in Canada. Many ridings in Northern Ontario are already bigger than some European countries. We don’t need to make it any harder for constituents to get to their MP offices, or to weaken their voice, and the voice of the North.
We cannot forget the language principles when we speak of fair representation in the House of Commons. The people of Northern Ontario include an important Francophone population that cannot be ignored when we determine the boundaries of an electoral riding.
The last thing Northern Ontario needs is fewer MPs in Ottawa.
I call on northern MPs from both sides of this House to support this bill.

MGH Ladies Auxiliary Meets Obligation

Hospital Happenings

Ladies Auxiliary President Linda Killingbeck recently presented Hospital CEO Mr. Jocelyn Bourgoin with a final cheque in the amount of $3,750.00 towards the purchase of a Stratus CS Stat Fluometric Chemistry Analyzer used to perform tests on blood samples. In 2011, the Auxiliary donated $6,750.00 to the Hospital. Mr. Bourgoin thanked the volunteers for their dedicated work. Their efforts are a key component in ensuring the Hospital has state of the art equipment for staff and patients.
Mr. Bourgoin commented that the Ladies Auxiliary often toils in the shadows and is not always recognized for their ongoing efforts. Their Christmas Tea Bazaar, Valentine Day Chocolate sale and Kozy Korner Gift Shop are their main sources of revenue. The next fundraising project will focus on a Pain Medication Infusion Pump. These pumps are designed to be used by the patient for ongoing pain control through a controlled yet continuous infusion of medication and can be of great benefit for palliative care and other serious conditions. Recent donations have been received for such a pump but more is needed. The Ladies Auxiliary has committed to raise the rest of the funds for the pump.

Senior Girls Wolverines Bring NWOSSAA Home

The Senior Wolverines travelled to Hornepayne on February 14, 2012 to compete in the NSSSAA finals. During the regular season, the Senior Girls Wolverines (6-0) and Senior Boys Wolverines (5-1) had secured their spots in the NSSSAA finals to represent the Central Division in senior girls’ volleyball and senior boys’ basketball. On day one, February 15, the boys’ basketball champions would be determined. The Senior Wolverines were first to the court to take on the Western Division Champions, the Lake Superior Stingers. From the start it was the Stingers to take the lead, but the Wolverines took advantage of their opportunities to stay close behind. At halftime the Wolverines were down by seven with a score of, 12-19. Their efforts continued into the second half of the game; however the Stingers pulled away from the Wolverines with a final score of 48-38. In their second and last game of the day, the Wolverines challenged the ESC Dubreville Senior Boys, representing the Eastern Division. From the first quarter to the last second of the game, the Wolverines dominated for a 47-29 win over Dubreville. Coaches Mr. Bob Kirkpatrick and Neil Esarte put in many hours and efforts to get to the NSSSAA finals and the Senior Boys Wolverines made that possible with this same goal in mind, congratulations on an amazing season Wolverines!

At the end of the day, it was the Lake Superior Senior Boys (West) to claim the NSSSAA title along with the Hornepayne Hawks Junior Boys (East). On the second day of the finals, the ESC St. Joseph Chevaliers (Central) won the NSSSAA title with straight wins over the Lake Superior Stingers Junior Girls and Hornepayne Hawks Junior Girls. The Senior Girls Wolverines challenged the Lake Superior Stingers in their first match with split sets (25-21, 21-25) and it was the Wolverines to come back strong in the third set for the win (15-4). The Wolverines carried that momentum into their game against the Hornepayne Hawks with home court advantage. With intense back and forth rallies, the Wolverines took the first set against the Hawks (25-20) but the Hawks pulled ahead in the second set to win (25-20) over the Wolverines. Once again the Wolverines conquered the third set (15-6) with an overall win over the Hawks. With their straight wins the Wolverines headed to the finals where they would play a second game against the Hornepayne Senior Girls for the NSSSAA Championship title. With a substantial comeback the Wolverines took the first set of the championship game (25-23).

During the second set, the Wolverines were in the lead from the start but the Hawks also made an impressive comeback making it another close set (25-23). It was the Manitouwadge Wolverines to claim the title in two straight sets and bring the well deserved banner home. The Senior Girls Wolverines, along with Coaches Mr. Wayne Pittman and Toby Mattson, will move on to the NWOSSAA finals to be held in Manitouwadge on Thursday, February 23 and Friday, February 24, 2012. The Wolverines (NSSSAA) will take on the La Verendyre Vipers (SSSAA) from Thunder Bay and the Queen Elizabeth Warriors (NorWOSSA) from Sioux Lookout on their home court. Mark Gorges was awarded the Citizen of the Year award for 2011 for his outstanding support of the community.

A small crowd gathered at the Ski Chalet on Friday evening.Because of the extreme cold weather all outdoor activities had been cancelledin the morning. But the warmth in the Ski Chalet to support 2011 Citizen of theYear Mark Gorges was overwhelming. A much deserved citizen for sure! MarkGorges the manager of F. P. Gorges and Sons better known as Frank’s has been abig supporter of our community over many years. He took over manager of hisfather’s store and was always there for our residents in good times and bad. Hemarried Kelly Slater and they had three girls, Becky, Jenny and Tracey who allgrew up here and worked at the store at some time. The big celebrations overthe years -25^th anniversary, the 40^th school reunion, the50^th, and the house-give a-ways, Mark and his staff were alwaysvisible helping. The huge Barbeques, at the beaches, at the town park , thelake wherever, Mark was there on behalf of his “little super store”. Mark alsostarted the downtown cleanup week inviting everyone to take part and then heprovided lunch. The Christmas Hampers were another big support and justrecently with two grandsons in Minor Hockey, Mark, Kelly and family really putout a 110% effort for Hockeyville. We congratulate Mark on this award andhope he enjoys his retirement.

Town Sees 8.5% Decrease in Population Since 2006

Canada’s population may be growing faster than that of any other G8 country, but here in Manitouwadge we are not reaping the rewards of expansion.

New census data shows that Manitouwadge’s population decreased by 8.5% to 2,105 from the previous census in 2006 having our community at 2,300.

With the decimation of the forestry industries is wreaking havoc on all surrounding communities.

All were hit with a decrease with one exception, Terrace Bay saw a drop of 9.5% to 1,466, Wawa fell to 2,634 a 11.3% fall, Marathon say their population settle at 3,333 with that coming from a 13.3% decrease, White River took the biggest hit with a loss of 27.8% putting them at 607.
The one surprise according to the 2011 Census Data is Schreiber, they saw an increase of 25% putting them just over the 1,100 mark from the old 901 in 2006.

The Census data also shows that our community has 1,129 private dwellings and of those 945 are occupied by usual residents, (A separate set of living quarters which has a private entrance either directly from outside or from a common hall, lobby, vestibule or stairway leading to the outside, and in which a person or a group of persons live permanently.)

The information released last Wednesday is just the beginning, as future numbers on Age and sex, Families, households and marital status, Structural type of dwelling and collectives and finally Language will follow in the coming year.

N.O.T.E.S Bringing in Magician for Special Family Day Show

Nite on the Town Entertainment Series has announced a special Family Day Magic Show.
Anders Boulanger aka Anders the Magician will be performing his magic show on Monday February 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the High School Auditorium.
Admission is Adults $12 for adults, $5 for youth, $10 senior and a special family price of $25 (immediate family only). Tickets on sale at The Echo office.
Anders got his start in magic at an early age. As a 5 year old he received a Fisher-Price Magic set for Christmas from his uncle. That one gift turned Anders on to the world of magic and many more magic sets and books followed. His first public performance was for his fellow kindergarten classmates. Throughout his school years show and tell proved to be an excellent outlet to show off his new found abilities.
His appearance in Manitouwadge on Feb. 20 as part of Nite on the Town Entertainment Series is one of a couple dozen he does annually for the younger set. Most of his 110 appearances are corporate related.

Northern Ontario Must not Lose Seats: NDP

North must preserve its weight in Parliament during new redistribution, NDP MPs say

Northern Ontario’s six New Democrat MPs calling on the region’s Conservative representatives to stand with them in defending fair representation for the region. They are introducing a Private Member's Bill guaranteeing Northern Ontario its current number of seats if the riding boundaries are redrawn.
“Many ridings in Northern Ontario are already bigger than some European countries,” said John Rafferty (Thunder Bay-Rainy River). “We don't need to make it any harder for constituents to get to their MP’s offices, or to weaken their voice. We're looking for the region's Conservatives to support our NDP bill, introduced by my colleague Claude Gravelle, to ensure Northern Ontario doesn't lose any more seats.”
Under the government’s redistribution legislation, Ontario will go from 106 to 121 seats in the House of Commons, while B.C. and Alberta get 5 additional seats each and Quebec 3. It is expected that many of Ontario’s new seats will go to Toronto’s fast-growing 905 region. The MPs argue that although the North dropped from 11 to 10 seats in the 2004 redistribution, the average population of Ontario ridings will be lower this time because of the 15 new seats added to the province.
“Today, New Democrats are drawing a line in the sand,” said Bruce Hyer (Thunder Bay-Superior North). “We will fight, tooth and nail, any attempt to weaken Northern Ontario’s voice. Our region is unique for many reasons including culture, history, economy, and geography. The people of Northern Ontario will not accept any loss of representation, especially considering Ontario as a whole is gaining 15 seats. The people of Northern Ontario deserve to be heard, and I am asking our region’s Conservatives to join us and stand up to defend Northern Ontario’s representation in the House of Commons.”
The Northern Ontario New Democrat MPs; Rafferty, Hyer, Carol Hughes (Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing), Claude Gravelle (Nickel Belt), Charlie Angus (Timmins-James Bay), and Glenn Thibeault (Sudbury) held a press conference on Monday at City Hall in Thunder Bay to speak about the issue.

Ontario Family Fishing Weekend Let's go fishing! for FREE!

Now heading into its 19th year, Ontario Family Fishing Events (formerly Ontario Family Fishing Weekend), is a province wide opportunity for Canadian residents to fish Ontario waters without the otherwise mandatory fishing version outdoors card. The Ontario Government designates two periods throughout the year as licence-free- the 3-day Family Day Weekend in February, and a full 9 days in July, which coincides with National Fishing Week.
Canadian residents between the ages of 18 and 64 years can fish licence-free during these designated days, but during all other periods, anglers must purchase an Outdoors Card and a fishing license to legally fish in Ontario.
Head out on your own, bring a friend along and introduce them to fishing, or participate in a local event. Fishing festivals, clinics, derbies and workshops are hosted across the province. To find an event happening near you, visit www.familyfishingweekend.com.

During the last home game and regular season game of the girls’ volleyball/boys’ basketball season, the Michipicoten Vikings travelled to Manitouwadge to take on the Wolverines. On their home court, the Junior Boys Wolverines fought a hard fight against the Vikings during their last game of the season. With the Wolverines tough defence the Vikings struggled to get to the basket but as the game progressed the Vikings pulled away with the same aggression. The Vikings won with a close score of 26-22 against the Wolverines. After a season of dedication and determination the small squad played their last season game until next year when they will return to the court. With strong passing and positive attitudes the Junior Girls Wolverines took on the Michipicoten Vikings in a three set match. It was the Vikings to take the first set (25-20) against the Wolverines.

However, the Wolverines came back in the second set with an intense battle to win (28-26). In the crucial third set, points went back and forth but it was the Vikings to win by two points against the Wolverines (15-13). Although the junior girls’ season has come to an end, they will continue to improve their skills and hit the court next year better than ever. The Senior Girls Wolverines added to their winning streak against the Vikings with a two set win (25-16, 25-17, 13-15). The Senior Boys Vikings did not attend; forfeiting their game against the Wolverines. With the Senior Boys Wolverines well earned previous wins (4-1) they have officially qualified for the NSSSAA finals along with the Senior Girls Wolverines. This season, the junior boys (3-3), junior girls (3-3), senior boys (5-1), and the senior girls (6-0), all achieved great things and accomplished many personal and team goals. All teams have so much to be proud of, congratulations on a great season Wolverines! However, the senior teams have officially confirmed their spots in the NSSSAA finals to represent Manitouwadge High School and the Central Division.

The finals will take place on February 15, 2012 (boys’ basketball) and February 16, 2012 (girls’ volleyball) in Hornepayne. Both teams will challenge the East and West Divisions for a shot at the title. Go Wolverines! Continue to follow The Echo for MHS sports results.

There Are no Excuses - OPP Cracking Down on Distracted Driving

After a busy week of spreading the word to Ontarians aboutthe dangers of distracted driving, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) iswarning motorists that its Distracted Driving campaign is in full swing andthat it will now focus on stringent enforcement of distracted driving laws on Ontario roads.

“Since last May (2011), we’ve carried out three of our four one-week‘PhoneIn One Hand, Ticket In The Other’ distracted driving campaigns and becausethis dangerous driving behaviour has become a widespread issue among all of ourpolicing partners, in North America and beyond, everyone should be familiar withthe dangers,” says Chief Superintendent Don Bell, Commander of the OPP HighwaySafety Division. “The lack of compliancewe continue to see on our roads today is nothing more than a blatant disregardfor the law and a personal choice to continue making distracted driving a dangerous,life-threatening habit rather than a case of a misinformed motoring public,”added Bell.

Throughout the week, from February 13-19, 2012, the OPP willbe targeting all forms of distraction that pose a risk to human life and theyare warning drivers that they’ve heard every imaginable excuse and apology fromthose caught not paying attention while driving.

“Our officers have already dealt with the victims andfamilies linked to eight distracted driving related fatalities on OPP-patrolledroads so far this year (as of February 12, 2012),” said Deputy CommissionerLarry Beechey, Provincial Commander, OPP Traffic Safety and OperationalSupport. “It’s alarming to see that theseeight deaths represent a more than 165 per cent spike in distracted drivingfatalities compared to this same time period last year. This needs to be a wakeup call to all drivers that no text, no phone call, no distraction behind thewheel is worth a human life,” added Beechey.

Using a cell phone or device capable of texting while driving canresult in a fine of $155 under Section 78.1 of the HTA. Watching an entertainment device can resultin a fine of $110 under Section 78 of the HTA. Other forms of distracteddriving can result in a charge of Careless Driving with fines ranging from $400 to $2,000, a possible licencesuspension of up to two years and/or a jail term of not more than six months,depending on the circumstances.

The OPP is reminding motorists that it will continue totarget this high-risk behaviour on Ontarioroads throughout the year, around the clock as part of its award-winningProvincial Traffic Safety Program (PTSP), in its ongoing efforts to improvehighway safety and save lives.

On February 9, 2012 approximately 2:00 pm members of theManitouwadge Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), ProvincialWeapons Enforcement Unit, and the Northwest Region Canine unit executed asearch warrant at 1 Brooks Streetin Manitouwadge ON.

While searching the residence officers located marihuana andtrafficking related materials. The value of which was under $1000.00. Theofficers also located several firearms and ammunition which were seized in theinterest of public safety.

David WHEADON, 62 years of age, of Manitouwadge ONwas charged with Possession for the Purpose of a Schedule II Controlled Drugand Substance. WHEADON was released from custody and is scheduled to appear inManitouwadge court on March 21, 2012.

Male Arrested For Bail Violations

(Manitouwadge, ON.)– On February 8, 2012 approximately 4:30 pm members of the ManitouwadgeDetachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) accompanied the Children’sAid Society (CAS) to a residence in Manitouwadge to assist with aninvestigation.

While in the residence, OPP officers observed Ridge ZOTTER,22 years old, of Manitouwadge in an intoxicated state and therefore breachingseveral of his release conditions.

ZOTTER was arrested and held for a bail hearing. He wascharged with Breaching an Undertaking (x4), Assault, Possession for the Purposeof a Schedule 1 Controlled Drug and Substance and Breach of Probation. ZOTTERwas remanded into custody and will appear before a Justice of the Peace onFebruary 13, 2012.

Move over Arthur Sicard there’s competition in the form of Manitouwadge’s very own Inventor Extraordinaire, Marcel Richard.

I happen to live next door to Marcel (my claim to fame) and it’s quite normal to find him up to something in his garage, but whilst we were away he was extra busy and came up with this beast!

At just over 48” wide, with four wheels, forward and reverse gears this snow blower certainly makes light work of clearing the drive!
And it’s painted in Marcel’s very own unique blue and orange livery! It certainly blew our socks off!

Hemlo Mines Creates Opportunities for First Nations Students

OMA member Barrick Hemlo Mines is providing opportunities for residents of two nearby First Nations, Pic River and Pic Mobert, in Northwestern Ontario — In 2009, the original 1992 agreement between Hemlo and these First Nations was broadened — It creates a framework to train First Nations people in skills for present and future mining employment, to support business development and to include involvement in environmental stewardship programs. . . .
“The agreement helps build capacity in First Nation communities to ensure that they benefit from mining,” said Roger Souckey, Superintendent of Employee Relations at Hemlo Mines. “About 50 First Nations people work at Hemlo Mines, or about 10% of the workforce. The mine is a benefit to the area.”
The Hemlo Operations of Barrick include the Williams and David Bell gold mines. The mines purchased goods and services worth $35 million in Ontario in 2010 and $147 million in Canada. In 2010, Hemlo Mines paid taxes and royalties of $8 million and contributed a further $800,000 in a variety of donations to local communities.
However, statistics no matter how impressive they are do not show the personal side of positive numbers. Myles Michano from Pic River First Nation and Hannah Desmoulin from Pic Mobert First Nation are both working at Hemlo in environmental monitoring jobs and the company is funding their education to earn environmental technician diplomas.
Mr. Michano, 29, is able to split his time between working at Hemlo and taking care of his ailing grandmother at Pic River. He has helped develop environmental monitoring policies for the reserve and he works in the field taking water samples, carrying out inspections and monitoring pipelines at the mine site. He is pursuing his diploma at Sault College in Sault Ste. Marie.
Ms. Desmoulin, 22, is a mother of two who was driving a shuttle bus between her reserve and the mine. Now, she is doing environmental monitoring duties at the mine and working on her diploma from Seneca College in Toronto by correspondence. “Where else can I get an opportunity like this,” she said.
In Ottawa last year, Barrick’s Hemlo Operations was presented with the Mining Association of Canada’s Towards Sustainable Mining Leadership Award. Hemlo received an “A” ranking in all independently monitored TSM categories, which include tailings management, energy use, external outreach and crisis management planning. While Hemlo’s scores reflect leadership in this range of categories, external outreach is a critical component of the operation’s – and Barrick’s – ongoing commitment to responsible mining.
Barrick’s Hemlo Operations are located about 350 kilometres east of Thunder Bay near Marathon. In 2010, production from the Williams and David Bell mines was 242,000 ounces of gold. Proven and probable reserves contain an estimated 1.4 million ounces of gold.

Strike Minerals Exploration on the Hemlo West Holdings

Strike Minerals Inc. (“Strike”) (TSX. V: STK) announces that the company has completed a cursory surface investigation of the company’s “Hemlo West Properties” located near Schreiber, Ontario.

The Company conducted a limited evaluation on the historical Harkness-Hayes property to determine accessibility to the property and obtained grab samples that contained any alteration (silicification, carbonitization) and/or rusty weathering/gossan indicating sulphide content. Twelve grab samples were procured. Sample results ranged from a trace to two samples with 0.555 and 0.901 g/t Au and one sample returned an assay of 15.5 g/t Au.

The historical Harkness-Hays gold property hosts a number of auriferous zones which have received little systematic work since mining operations in the 1930’s. Historical channel sampling on Vein #3 returned grades of 2.63 g/t Au over 25.4 cm to 1396.7 g/t Au over 25.4 cm for channels cut every 5 feet over a strike length of 250 feet. (* note: historical non 43-101 compliant values).

An additional 23 rock samples were taken over a number of surface mineralized zones. The Morley zone had a brecciated sulphide vein with a strike length in excess of 150 m with a subvertical to 60 degree westerly dip. Two samples of altered rhyolite volcanic were taken across the vein at approximately 50 m separation yielded values of 5.5 g/t Au and 1,040 g/t Ag with 2.62% Zn and 1% Pb , a second sample had 3.65 g/tonne Au and 1,320 g/t Ag in the third sample had 2.63 g/t Au.

In the north-eastern portion of the property numerous north-western trending hydrothermal quartz veins were located. The veins were generally associated with carbonate alteration and tourmaline. Samples taken were mineralized with pyrite, chalcopyrite and in some samples pyrrhotite and yielded 4.04 g/t Au and 13 g/t Au.

Strike Minerals plans to carry out further systematic geological mapping, trenching and sampling programs over the property in the spring of 2012, to identify areas of gold mineralization for further exploration. Cleaning of historical trenches and surface stripping will allow for channel sampling to test the various identified zones for continuity along strike. Future diamond drilling will test for continuity at depth.

Strike Minerals is a TSX-V listed company that is engaged in the exploration and development of precious metal properties in Canada. Its primary property is the former producing Edwards Gold Mine property in the Goudreau – Lochalsh Gold Camp near Wawa Ont. Historic production in the camp between 1930 and 2001 is estimated at 500,000 ounces. Between 1996 and 2001 underground development was completed through a decline to a depth of approximately 290 m and mining over the period resulted in 145,000 oz being produced from the Edwards property at an average grade of 0.35 oz/t. At present Strike has dewatered the underground workings to the 120m level and is commencing development on the 60m and 90m level with the plan to be in production by the end of 2012.

Novice Copper Kings Take on the Challenge of the Robin’s Tournament

What do you do when you’re booked to play in a big hockey tournament in Thunder Bay and just a few days before it starts, you realize that due to unforeseen circumstances, you only have eight players attending?
Well, they’re just kids, and it’s more about team spirit and having fun than winning or losing, so you go anyway. It was the weekend of January 13-15 when the Manitouwadge Novice Copper Kings attended the 36th Annual Port Arthur Minor Hockey Association “Robin’s Tournament” in Thunder Bay. Out of 18 Novice teams in Pool B, including 11 teams from Thunder Bay, and the remainder from Atikokan, Marathon, Wawa, Longlac, Nipigon and Fallen Rock, our Manitouwadge team finished the Round Robin in fifth place with a record of three wins and one loss (28 goals for and only 7 against).
At the start of each game, the parents of the Copper Kings players sat in the stands, watching the opposing teams players streaming onto the ice like hornets buzzing out of a nest and then filling the opposing zone with players. A quick look to the Copper Kings end of the ice, with just eight kids banging the puck around, seemingly oblivious to the fact the odds didn?t look good? We knew which team people were putting their bets on. It was so remarkable that our little team with only eight players (seven skaters and one goalie) managed to even keep up. Due to the tournament requirements of playing two-minute shifts, the forwards had to play six-minute shifts, and the defensemen four-minute shifts, before being allowed to come off for a rest. Our youngest Manitouwadge team turned a few heads as they competed against teams that had more than twice the number of players as we did. One parent commented that we were the only team where the coaches (three) outnumbered the players (two) on the bench! At the end of an amazing weekend, our eight players demonstrated the epitome of hard work and teamwork as they battled through every game, finally losing in the quarter-finals on Sunday morning to the Wawa Travelers in a nail-biter 6-4 (it had been 4-4 with two minutes left to play). It will inevitably be one of those tournaments that our kids will remember for the rest of their lives.

Northern Trails Ski Club Season Kick Off

The annual season kick off took place on Saturday with its free wiener roast by the lake. I popped along just after 12 noon and have to say I think the turnout was even better than last year! The ski boot racks were almost bare by around ten after twelve and one young lady, determined to make the most of the snow, squeezed herself into a size smaller boot as all the ones her size were out! Well-done Bridget Giles! Only wish I could have squeezed myself into a size smaller ski pant, but let’s not go there!
Our thanks to Robin, Virginia and all the volunteers for giving us the best kept trails and club! Long may the snow continue!

Former Resident Christmas Present Pays Off Big Time

$5000.00 richer, Eddy Hogan along with girlfriend Laura Clark and baby Emmett.

Congratulations to Eddy Hogan, former resident of Manitouwadge now living in Toronto. He won $5,000.00 from the Heart & Stroke Calendar Lottery on January 30.

Eddy was one of 3 that won that day. The calender was given to Eddy by his dad Lawrence (Hoagie) Hogan as a Christmas gift. "Not a bad Christmas gift." said Eddy's Dad "I buy them (calendars) for all the kids as well as family out East."

Eddy says "unexpected but it was a nice suprise" they learned of the winnings on the Heart & Stroke website. First big plans are to buy baby Emmett something special at Toys R' Us.

UPDATE: Terrace Bay Resident Located

On the morning of January 28, 2012 a missing Terrace Bay, Ontario resident was located. Gregory (Greg) MUCKADAY, 31, was found deceased in a forested area in the community of Terrace Bay.

The Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) was engaged on January 27, 2012 to manage the investigation with the assistance of the North West Region Crime Unit, Emergency Response Team (ERT), and Schreiber Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).

Police have been actively searching the Terrace Bay area for Mr. MUCKADAY since he was reported missing on January 23, 2012.

A post mortem examination has been scheduled for Monday January 30, 2012 at Regional Health Science Centre, Thunder Bay, Ontario. At present, no foul play is suspected.

The CIB with the assistance of the North West Region Crime Unit continue to investigate.

Public Safety Warning Issued, Male in Custody After Search / Highway Reopens

(MARATHON, ON.) - The Marathon Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was investigating an incident on Highway 17 between Marathon and Neys Provincial Park.

At approximately 5:40am this morning OPP members attempted to stop an eastbound motor vehicle between Terrace Bay and Marathon. The vehicle came to a stop west of Marathon and when Police approached the vehicle, there were no occupants. A search of the immediate area was conducted and one male was arrested in relation to the incident.

Justin Joseph CHAISSON, 21 years of age, from Saskatoon, SK is in custody and being held for bail hearing at the Schreiber OPP detachment. The accused has been charged with Possession of Stolen Property Over $5000, Flight from Police and Breach of Probation.

The OPP Crime Unit is investigating the possibility of a second male’s involvement in occurrences along the Trans Canada highway but there is no active search for that person in the Marathon vicinity.

Anyone who may have information that would assist in the investigation is encouraged to contact the police at 1-888-310-1122 or remain anonymous by calling CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Judy Kett is the first winner in an online contest offering Ontario shoppers a chance to Win Groceries for a Year (value up to $7,500). The contest, a partnership between McCain Foods (Canada) and Metro Ontario Inc., offers weekly draws for $750 in groceries in the three weeks leading up to Super Bowl Sunday. The final draw for the grand prize of up to $7,500 worth of groceries, will be held on February 6, 2012, the day after the Super Bowl.

Kett admits that she enters “a lot” of contests and, over the years has had a few big wins. She usually enters online contests while relaxing or watching television. “But I’ve had a dry spell for the last little while,” she said in a telephone interview “so it’s really nice to win this one. It’s always exciting to win things.” Kett and her husband live about four hours from the nearest Metro store in Thunder Bay but that won’t stop her from cashing in her prize. “I’ll happily travel that distance for a prize this good.”

She said she also plans to share her winnings with her two grown children who live in southern Ontario. Ontario shoppers can enter the contest at http://www.facebook.com/metro.ontario. The contest closes Feb. 3. When asked if she will enter the contest again to try to win the grand prize, Kett replied, “You betcha.” She also said that she plans to watch the big game on Super Bowl Sunday. Senior Girls Wolverines Claim Spot in NSSSAA Finals

It was an anxious bus ride on the morning of January 17, 2011 as the Wolverines took to the road again, this time travelling to Marathon to take on the Falcons. It was the Senior Boys Wolverines to take to the court first, coached by Mr. Bob Kirkpatrick and Neil Esarte, with a must-win game against the Falcons. The Senior Boys (3-1) have previously defeated Marathon at home with a close game, 44-42. This time around things were looking up for the squad of six with a score of 25-19 at halftime.

With tough defence and determination the Wolverines pulled ahead to take the win against the Marathon Falcons, 59-47. Coached by Mr. Wayne Pittman and Toby Mattson, the Senior Girls Wolverines (4-0) continued their undefeated streak on the Falcon’s home court with a three set win (25-15, 25-11, 15-5). With this win, the Senior Girls have ensured their spot in the NSSSAA finals to represent the Central Division. Following the Senior Wolverines success, the junior girls (2-2) challenged the Falcons with a close first set (28-26).

The Junior Girls Wolverines, coached by Bronson Keough and staff supervisor Mr. Ted Lalonde, took the next two sets with consistent serving (25-15, 15-8) adding to their wins. The Junior Boys Wolverines (3-1) may have been considered “the underdogs” with a team consisting of seven grade nine boys but these boys worked hard to make their coaches, Mr. Gord Martin, Ronnie Fogarty, Kevin Gauthier, and Kaitlyn Newton, proud. The Wolverines dominated from the start with a 6-0 lead after the first quarter. The Junior Boys Wolverines proved to be fierce competitors for even this strong team, in both height and numbers.

Although they were leading for the majority of the game, the Falcons pulled ahead at the end to earn a 26-20 win over the Wolverines. Going into the last sports day of the regular season, the senior girls (5-0), senior boys (4-1), junior girls (3-2), and junior boys (3-2) hope to excel over the Michipicoten Vikings at home on February 7, 2012.

On Monday,January 23^rd, Constable and Community Services Officer, Dave Shawfrom the Marathon OPP Detachment provided older adults with valuableinformation on the Protection of Personal Privacy.

Over twentypeople were in attendance for the presentation at the Golden Age Center whereConstable Shaw spoke about various topics including telephone scamming, homesecurity and renovations in the home.

Some keypoints Shaw stressed were having proper outdoor lighting with sensors and tolet neighbours know when you are out of town so they could keep an eye on yourhome. Everyone has probably answered thephone and heard the sounds of a cruise ship on the other line, Constable Shawwarned about telephone scamming. Hecautioned for people to be weary of 900 area code numbers and if ever in doubt,to ask the person for a call back number. He also warned about emails being sent to people asking for money fromloved ones because they were hurt or in need.

It was alsonoted that when getting home renovations or having services fixed in your home,be sure you know who you’re letting in and that you have adequate informationabout them.

Missing Terrace Bay Resident

(SCHREIBER, ON.)–On January 23, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. Schreiber Ontario Provincial Police (OPP)received a call of a missing person from a residence in Terrace Bay, Ontario.

Greg MUCKADAY, a 31 year old male, was last seen during theearly morning hours of January 23 at his residence in the town of Terrace Bay.

Mr. MUCKADAY is described as a First Nationmale, 6 feet 2 inches tall, and approximately 160 pounds. MUCKADAY was last seen wearing a brownsweater jacket, blue jeans, and snow pants.

Schreiber OPP, the North West Unit Emergency Response Team(ERT), and the North West Region Crime Unit are currently searching the Terrace Bay area for the missing male.

(THUNDER BAY, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to advise that current environmental conditions are resulting in near white-out conditions in Thunder Bay and areas east. Sections of highways # 11 and #11/17 have been closed over the last six hours and conditions are being monitored. Motorists are being advised that if you do not need to travel, stay home.

The OPP are reminding motorists to:

* Slow down and drive to the weather and road conditions;

* Leave more space between vehicles. Stopping distances are at least double on snowy roads, and even longer in icy conditions;

* Be ready for rapidly changing conditions. Blowing snow may suddenly reduce visibility, and gusting winds can cause ice to form quickly;

A giant innovator from Northwestern Ontario, Michael Power has passed away.

Michael Power was born in Montreal on January 1, 1942. He passed away January 19, 2012.

He served as Mayor of Greenstone from 2003, as well as Mayor of Geraldton for several terms.

He was involved in the Thunder Bay Municipal Association, the Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association, and the Association of Municipalities of Ontario.

OPP Set to Increase Enforcement on Ontario Highways

Response to Recent Fatal Collisions

Less than one month into 2012and Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) statistics indicate the number of peoplethat have lost their lives on OPP patrolled highways has more than doubled overthe same period last year.

The unusually high number of highway deaths on OPP-patrolled roadshas resulted in 17 people tragically losing their lives in vehicle crashessince January 1 compared to eight during the same period in 2011.

While it is too early in the year to predict how road safety willfare in 2012, there is no doubt that the first weeks of January have beentreacherous. The OPP will be deploying all its available resources and utilizeintelligence-led policing to target enforcement while continuing to educatedrivers of their responsibility to be safe road users.

The education and targeted enforcement will focus on the "BigFour" high risk driving behaviours identified in the OPP's internationalaward-winning Provincial Highway Traffic Safety Program (PTSP). Thisprogram targets the four leading causes of injuries and death on Ontarioroadways: aggressive driving, distracted driving, impaired driving andoccupants not wearing safety restraints.

"The OPP is committed to addressing this disturbing start tothe year with heightened education and enforcement. We will be relentlessin our approach," said Chief Superintendent Don Bell, Commander HighwaySafety Division. "We intend to use every available means at our disposalto stem this needless loss of lives."

Weather changes, particularly during the winter, can occursuddenly and dramatically in Ontario. Without warning, sudden storms andplunging temperatures can drastically change road conditions and reducevisibility. The OPP is reminding drivers that it is critical to adjustdriving behaviour to the weather conditions that can change without warning.

"We must understand that it is frequently the driver'sfailure to adjust to the road and weather conditions that is the cause of manyof these tragic crashes," says Deputy Commissioner Larry Beechey,Provincial Commander of Traffic Safety and Operational Support. "Ontario'swinters can make for some of the most challenging driving in Canada. Roadconditions in the winter are predictable, yet drivers of all ages are oftentaken by surprise. Slow down! Drive as if your life depended on it…because itdoes."

OPP Special Investigations Unit (SIU) invokes mandate

(THUNDER BAY, ON)On Monday January 17, 2012 at approximately 11:30am Thunder Bay OntarioProvincial Police (OPP) was requested to assist in locating a distraught malewho was known to be in the area of Hwy 527 and the Dorion cutoff. This is an area approximately 40km north ofHwy 11&17.

Atapproximately 6:00pm members of the OPP’s Emergency Response Team (ERT) locatedthe male barricaded in his vehicle on the Dorion cutoff. During his interaction with the officers the maledischarged a firearm which resulted in self-inflicted life threateninginjuries. OPP officers immediatelyadministered first aid and requested ambulance. The male has been transported to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Science Center. No officers were injured during thisoccurrence.

The OPP notified the SpecialInvestigations Unit (SIU) who has invoked its mandate. As a result, the OPPwill be unable to release further information. Further inquiries should bedirected to SIU Communications at 416-622-2342.

Council extends appreciation to those who were set to assist evacuees

Mayor John MacEachern, on behalf of Council has extend appreciation to all Township Staff, Volunteer Fire Fighters, local businesses and community members, who served to help prepare in any way, for the arrival of evacuee’s due to the forest fires in 2011, states a press release issued by the Township on Friday.

Terrace Bay Pulp will not re-open as scheduled; Mill now for sale

Terrace Bay Pulp will not be restarting operations as scheduled on March 1st.

And now the mill is for sale.

It is believed that the current owner, The Buchanan Group, headed by company founder Ken Buchanan Sr., has lost its financial backer. Terrace Bay Pulp exited creditor protection in the fall of 2010 with the help of $30 million in capital from Toronto lender Callidus Capital Corporation, and a $25 million loan from the province of Ontario.

The community of Terrace Bay, Ontario sensed there was bad news coming about their mill. Union officials said the company unexpectedly paid out about $2 million in vacation pay last month.
The mill announced it was taking 3 months of downtime starting on November 30, 2011.
In 2006 it appeared the mill was about to be torn down, but The Buchanan Group made a deal to transfer to assets of the mill to them from Neenah Paper for $18 million.

Government talking points on the environment are ridiculous

Democracy is just gumming up the process. That was the main message from Conservative strategist Tom Flanagan in an interview on the CBC show, Power and Politics. Mr. Flanagan was speaking about the review process for the proposed Northern Gateway Pipeline and the many people who would like to be heard on the subject.

At the same time, Canada’s Natural Resources Minister, Joe Oliver, published an open letter that characterized groups expressing concerns about the pipeline as ‘radical’. It appears that if you don’t agree with the oil companies, then you are, in the eyes of your government, radical.

For your information, the government’s definition of radical groups now includes the Haisla First Nation whose concerns include the suggestion that the pipeline could put their community and its traditional way of life at risk. They are fighting to protect the same coastline that dealt with the massive oil spill from the Exxon Valdez. It would appear that first-hand knowledge about oil spills and fact-based objections to pipelines are reasons enough for the government to label and dismiss you.
The Natural Resources Minister also accused the environmental groups who are concerned about the pipeline of taking money from foreigners to do their bidding. Of course he ignored the fact that Canadian companies have been lobbying American politicians on behalf of the Keystone XL Pipeline that would carry tar sands’ bitumen to Texas refineries. He ignored the significant amount of foreign ownership of the companies working the tar sands too.

The government is looking worse by the day when it comes to having a real discussion about anything that has a connection to the oil sands. The Globe and Mail quickly published an editorial about Mr. Oliver’s letter which stated, “there are legitimate concerns about oil tankers and the possibility of a spill. The government should respect the process enough not to heap scorn on the participants.”
The government must also consider that pipelines leak no matter how well designed they are. That is the reason they are controversial. Just as this review process began, we learned another pipeline that Enbridge (the company that will build the Northern Gateway) is experiencing a leak in one of its lines in the Gulf of Mexico. In 2010, an Enbridge line in Michigan leaked 20,000 barrels of oil into the Kalamazoo River – this is the kind of disastrous event proponents of wild salmon and the last pristine temperate rainforest on earth are hoping to avoid.

Mr. Oliver claims we are making a historic choice about diversifying markets. Most people I know agree the choice is historic, but is more about whether we will protect our environment at all from oil companies who, rightly so, have no real interest beyond their bottom line. This government should consider that it is supposed to represent Canadian interests and that those interests extend beyond the balance sheets of foreign companies reaping huge profits from Canadian resources.

Wolverines challenge Vikings and Chevaliers in Wawa

On their first away game of the season, the Wolverines travelled to Wawa on Wednesday, January 11, 2012 to go head to head against the Michipicoten Vikings and ESC Saint Joseph Chevaliers. Despite poor weather conditions, the Wolverines arrived safely to challenge the hosting teams. Games were played at both schools throughout the day. First at ESC Saint Joseph, was a battle between the Senior Girls Wolverines and Chevaliers where the Wolverines were successful, earning a three set win (25-16, 25-13, 15-6). At Michipicoten High School, the Senior Boys Wolverines were determined to remain undefeated as they took to the court against the Vikings. At the end of the game, the Wolverines had accomplished their goal by continuing their success with a 33-22 win over the Vikings.

Back at ESC Saint Joseph, the Junior Girls Wolverines challenged the victorious Chevaliers with an intense match. However, it was the Chevaliers to take the win (22-25, 21-25, 8-15). With their first game against the Vikings, the Junior Boys Wolverines took to the court with dedication and drive. After a back and forth game the Wolverines did not quit, which paid off, adding to their win with a final score, 26-25. The girl’s volleyball teams made their way to Michipicoten High School to take on the Vikings while the boy’s basketball teams headed to ESC Saint Joseph to challenge the Chevaliers.

The undefeated Senior Girls Wolverines continued their success against the Vikings with a close match (25-18, 25-20, 15-6). At ESC Saint Joseph, the Senior Boys Wolverines lost their first game of the season to the Chevaliers, 34-42. The Junior Girls Wolverines took to the court with confidence as they served their way to victory against the Vikings (21-25, 25-11, 15-11). After a substantial comeback, the Junior Boys Wolverines finished with their second win over the Chevaliers, 29-28.

Likeother motorized recreation activities, snowmobiling poses certain inherentrisks: it occurs off-road in an unpredictable and uncontrollable naturalsetting. Each rider has the personal responsibility to always expect theunexpected and use good common sense. Most snowmobiling-related incidents arepreventable by making these smart choices:

Ride Without Alcohol or Drugs: If a rider is served a “warn range” suspension,their driver’s licence is suspended immediately, effectively ending their rideon the spot. If convicted of driving a snowmobile while impaired, a rider will loseall driving privileges (car, truck, motorcycle, off-road vehicles andsnowmobiles) and jeopardize future insurability.

Stay on the Trail: The OFSC makes designatedtrails available that are marked, mapped, maintained and patrolled for thesafety and enjoyment of snowmobilers. By avoiding closed trails and not ridingoff-trail on roads, lakes, unfamiliar terrain and private property, riders cangreatly reduce their risk of getting into trouble.

Take It Easy: Take it easy on every rideby always obeying the law and always staying to the right of the trail. Eachrider should snowmobile with care and control, within their own ability andaccording to current trail and weather conditions.

Know Before You Go: No ice travel is completelysafe. Hypothermia or drowning from riding into open water or falling throughthe ice are serious risks, as are collisions with fixed objects such as docks,ice huts or shorelines.

See and Be Seen: Good judgment, depthperception and quick reaction time dependon being able to see properly at all times. Slow down and keep right in reducedvisibility situations like snow dust, sun glare, heavy falling snow, or whenvisor or glasses are fogged, and always wear bright colours and reflectivematerials so others can see you more easily.

Slow Down at Night: Darkness reduces visibilityand alters perceptions, so riders must ride even more cautiously at night andnever outrun their sled headlights.

Be Prepared: Snowmobiling can take youfar away from emergency assistance, so each rider must be prepared forself-help by carrying a tool kit, spare parts, flashlight, first-aid kit andsurvival items such as high-energy food, fire-starting equipment and a compass.

Ride with Companions: Never snowmobile alone.Riding buddies can provide immediate assistance for breakdowns, getting stuckor emergency situations.

A truck got stuck on Rainy Lake, near Haymarsh Bay. The incident prompted police to issue a warning to the public about the dangers of driving on the ice.

(FORT FRANCES,ON) – With the recent warm weather, the OntarioProvincial Police are reminding the public to be very cautious about changingice conditions. On January 6, 2011 officersresponded to a call regarding a motorist near HaymarshBay on Rainy Lake. A driver of a pick up truck was driving on anice road when he attempted to drive through three to four feet of water at theedge of an ice heave. The vehiclestalled and the occupants and vehicle were left stranded on the ice. There were no injuries and all occupants wereable to exit the vehicle safely.

“Ice conditions arechanging rapidly throughout the District”, says Constable Anne McCoy, “theslush and water are evidence that the ice is weakening”. In recent days there have been rain and snowaccumulations that will affect ice surfaces and ice strength.

The public is urgedto use caution and officers suggest parents ensure their children are aware ofthe ice dangers.

R.I.D.E. program results in arrests

(MANITOUWADGE, ON) – On Wednesday January 11, 2012 at 5:00 p.m, officers from Ontario Provincial Police (OPP)Manitouwadge detachment were conducting a R.I.D.E. check on Highway 614 justSouth of Manitouwadge.

A vehicle and occupants were stopped at the R.I.D.Echeck and further investigation revealed that one occupant was in contraventionof his release conditions and another had outstanding warrants from the city ofThunder Bay.

As a result of the arrests, a search of the occupantsand the vehicle was conducted. A quantity of marihuana and cocaine being seizedby police. The value of the drugs was over $5000.00.

The following individuals were charged with Possessionof a Controlled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking:

Nelson Cabral, 25 yrs of age;

Paulo Cabral, 33 yrs ofage;

Clinton Ellis, 35 yrs of age;

Michael Harrop, 34 yrs of age.

All four men are from Manitouwadge and willappear in court on March 21, 2012 at 9:00 am.

Small plane crash- North Spirit Lake First Nation

(THUNDER BAY, ON.) – On Tuesday, January 10, 2011 at approximately 11:30 a.m. (Eastern Time) the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was notified by the Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC) in Trenton of the crash of a small plane.

Members of the OPP North West Region including the OPP Emergency Response Team (ERT) and Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service (NAPS) have responded to this remote location northwest of the Spirit Lake First Nation to assist JRCC in the search and rescue effort.

The OPP and NAPS will remain on scene to assist the Transportation Safety Board of Canada in the investigation.

Suspicous package investigated in Marathon

On the 8^th of January 2012, Marathon OntarioProvincial Police (OPP) responded to a report of a suspicious package at aresidence in Marathon.

Police were contacted when a Marathonresident realized that there was a package of unknown origin contained within aparcel that they had received. Theoriginal sender of the package was contacted and confirmed that the suspiciousportion of the package had not been placed in the box at the original point ofmailing.

Unable to confirm the nature of the wrapped package policecontacted the Explosives Disposal Unit (EDU) to attend and establish the natureof the package. The EDU team completed their investigation and determined thatthe package was not dangerous in nature.

Cleaning Up Peninsula Harbour

McGuinty Government Supporting Clean, Healthy Great Lakes

Clean-up of Lake Superior’s Peninsula Harbour near Marathon will start this spring.
Ontario, the federal government, and Ball Packaging, a former owner of the community’s now closed pulp and paper mill, are financing the clean-up project. The work will improve water quality and help ensure the health of the harbour’s natural habitat by capping leftover waste from past polluters. This is the last step in the plan to restore the harbour to a safe, healthy state.
The Great Lakes enhance the quality of life for Ontario families by providing drinking water as well as recreation, environmental and economic benefits in our communities. Protecting our Great Lakes is part of the McGuinty government’s plan to become North America’s water innovation leader.

The federal government will coordinate the contracts and work to finish the sediment capping. Work is expected to begin this spring and be completed in the fall.

Peninsula Harbour was designated an Area of Concern in 1987. The area includes the Marathon waterfront and extends four kilometres into Lake Superior.

An Area of Concern is an area where the environment has been harmed, resulting in problems that may include: beach closures; loss of fish and wildlife habitat; negative effects on fish and wildlife populations; restrictions on fish consumption; and effects on drinking water.

The Guide to Eating Ontario Sport Fish advises people to eat fewer fish from Peninsula Harbour than most other areas of Lake Superior.

Ontario and Canada share responsibility in cleaning up 43 Areas of Concern under the Canada-Ontario Agreement Respecting the Great Lakes Basin Ecosystem.

Amber Alert issued for two children abducted in Timmins

TIMMINS, Ont. - Police in Timmins, Ont., have issued an Amber Alert for two young children they say were abducted in the Timmins area.
Police are looking for three-year-old Aiden Johnson and one-year-old Kara Johnson, who they believe to be with their father Zachary Johnson.
Aiden Johnson is described as three-foot-six, stocky build, light brown medium length hair with blue eyes.
Police say he was wearing black and red Oshkosh snow boots with two Velcro straps and a white winter jacket with blue and black rockets and spaceships.
Kara Johnson is described as two-feet-tall, petite build, light brown short hair with bangs, fine hair, and hazel eyes.
She was wearing a one-piece one piece, turquoise baby sleeper with a bunny in front.
Zachary Johnson is described as five-foot-10, skinny build, short curly dark brown hair with some grey, grey-green eyes, and scruffy facial hair.
The vehicle Johnson was driving was located broken down near Westmount Avenue and University Street in Timmins.
Police have been unable to locate Johnson and the kids and say he could be headed for Ottawa, Nova Scotia or Saint Sauveur des Monts, Que.

New Years stabbing in Marathon

OPP in Marathon are reporting a New Years day stabbing. They say it happened around 5:30 yesterday morning on Hemlo Drive in that community. The injured man was taken to the local hospital and treated for his injuries and released. A 20 year old woman from Mobert is charged and is in custody waiting for a bail hearing.

Many of the estimated 11million cases of food poisoning each year in Canada could be prevented byfollowing simple food handling and preparation techniques. The Health Unitencourages you to take the following steps to ensure that your guests do notleave the table with a nasty bug that could cause a food-borne illness, morecommonly known as food poisoning:

Clean your hands, utensils, cutting boards and work space by using soap and water
Separate raw meats from vegetables and cooked foods to avoid cross-contamination
Cook foods to the proper temperatures; use a thermometer to check
Chill foods properly in the refrigerator

To prevent potentialcross-contamination, cook stuffing separately in its own dish in the oven or onthe stove top. If you do stuff your turkey, stuff the cavity loosely rightbefore you put the bird in the oven and remove all stuffing as soon the turkeyis done. Cook the stuffing to a minimum internal temperature of 74° C (165° F)and refrigerate within two hours of cooking.
When it comes to the star ofthe show, the turkey, use a food thermometer to make sure it is cookedproperly. The temperature of the thickest part of the thigh should be at least85° C (185° F). Try to find a spot on the thigh away from the bone to insertthe thermometer.
Leftovers are a big part ofholiday meal traditions and can be enjoyed safely by these tips:

Throw away any cooked food has been left out for more than two hours.
When in doubt, throw it out!
Refrigerate all leftovers quickly in small, uncovered, shallow containers. Eat refrigerated leftovers within 2 to 3 days or freeze them for later use.
Reheat leftovers to a safe internal temperature of 74ºC (165ºF).
